'Other Guys' Rings up $13.2 Mil in First-day Coin

Sony's buddy-cop action comedy " The Other Guys," starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, sped to the top of the daily boxoffice rankings with an estimated $13.2 million from its first day in movie theaters on Friday.

The auspicious start to its domestic campaign keeps "Guys" well on track to fetch more than $35 million through Sunday. That should be plenty to give the PG-13 pic a No. 1 opening weekend.

It also puts the PG-13 rated movie, directed by Adam McKay, somewhat ahead of such other Ferrell comedies as the 2004 "Anchorman," which had a first-day gross of $10.8 million on its way to a $28.4 million opening weekend and the 2008 "Step Brothers," which opened to $11.8 million and a $30.9 opening weekend. If the crowds keep coming, "Guys" could become Ferrell's second best opener, behind only 2006's "Talladega Nights."

Disney's threequel " Step Up 3D" -- which was 50% co-financed by Summit Entertainment -- stepped into multiplexes with $6.6 million in first-day coin. The ho-hum start to the PG-13 dance musical's first weekend was good enough to grab second place on the day.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros.' leggy Leonardo DiCaprio starrer "Inception" took in $5.5 million in third place on Friday. Though placing two rungs lower than the high-flying fantasy thriller had ranked previously, the solid daily tally pushed its cumulative boxoffice to $214.7 million on the cusp of a fourth frame in release.

Among pics entering sophomore sessions, Paramount's PG-13 comedy "Dinner for Schmucks" registered $3.4 million in fourth place on Friday for a $39.6 million cume, while Warners' 3D family sequel "Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" fetched $2.2 million in seventh place with a $21.7 million cume. "Schmucks" star Steve Carrell was also represented by the sixth place movie, the animated "Despicable Me," from Universal, which crossed the $200 million barrier on Thursday and added an additional $2.9 million to its kitty on Friday.

Sony's Angelina Jolie-starrer "Salt" continued on the run, as it took fifth place with a daily haul of $3 million.

Universal's romantic fantasy "Charlie St. Cloud" collected $1.7 million from its eighth day in release, an eighth-place performance that pushed pic cume to $20.5 million.

Is Bill Cosby Dead? No, But He'll Humor the Rumor to Push His iPhone App

(Aug. 2) -- Have you heard the news? According to the Internet, Bill Cosby died Monday ... again.

No, the seminal comedian and Jell-O pudding pitchman is not really dead. And no, it's not the first time that Internet rumors have posited the death of Mr. Cosby. In February, a similar claim was spread across social networking sites like Twitter, to which Cosby offered a bemused response.

"As you well know, a dead person cannot rebuttal. Therefore, I am rebuttaling to tell you that when I heard the news I immediately began rebutalling and went into denial," Cosby wrote on his website on Feb. 6. "My wife just informed me that there is no such word as rebuttaling, she says the word is rebutting. But I don't care, because I'm alive!"

Monday's new death rumor generated tremendous Web interest, quickly becoming one of the most searched terms on Google and dominating the Trending Topics column on Twitter. This time, however, Cosby seemed intent on turning news of his own death to his advantage.

Well played, Mr. Cosby. As celebrities from Elvis to J.D. Salinger know, death can result in a huge spike in sales, so why not harness death rumors to a similar economic advantage? While Cosby's iPhone app is free, it does lead users to a host of products -- from audio books to concert albums -- that are not.

Will Chris Lambton Be the Next Bachelor? Reasons Why He Will!

Now that Ali Fedotowsky has made her choice, Roberto Martinez, women everywhere want to fly to Cape Cod, Mass., to comfort the runner-up Chris Lambton. Well, hold your horses. Because ABC loves to give the rejectee a second chance at love, which means it’s probably not a good idea to start dating Chris as he embarks on meeting 25 beautiful suitors. You heard it here first: Chris will be the next Bachelor. Why?

–Girls all over the country have fallen for him. He’s cute, his family was awesome and Chris Harrison would no doubt say he’s “America’s new sweetheart.” Well, except he’s a guy, but you get the point.

–ABC loves to recycle instead of finding new blood for the stars of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Trista Rehn was the runner-up for first Bachelor Alex Michel. Bob Guiney was passed over by Trista Rehn. Meredith Phillips became The Bachelorette after Bob Guiney chose Estella Gardinier. Jen Schefft was chosen after Andrew Firestone pulled the plug on marrying her, his first-choice pick. Jillian Harris was rejected by Jason Meznick. Jake Pakvelka was sent home by Jillian Harris. And so on.

–The good news is this guy seems really ready to get married. Really ready to start a family! He’s not in it for fame, but in it for love.

–The possible bad new is: does he have the oomph needed for a Bachelor? Can he carry an entire program as the star? I say yes. ABC producers, give a guy who is really seeking love (not a stint on Dancing with the Stars) a go! I mean, he’s about a million times better than Jake Pavelka. We’ll watch!

What do you think? Would Chris Lambton make a good Bachelor?

Shark Week Kicks Off 23rd Year

Discovery Channel prepares for a week of shark programming
Christina Warner
One of Discovery Channel’s more anticipated programs has begun its 23rd year. Shark Week, as declared by the Discovery Channel, is “the most wonderful time of the year.”

Discovery Channel has been promoting the seven-day special in various ways, one of which includes the option of sending an e-card reminder to your friends. “Happy Shark Week,” it declares.

According to Nielsen data, the past three years have been the most popular in Shark Week history, garnering over 27.6 million viewers.

Ultimate Air Jaws kicked off the week with an hour-long episode that featured the Great White shark leaping into the air after its prey. Nature videographers experimented with various methods to capture the out-of-water tactics of the sharks. While the shark can propel itself 10 feet into the air, it can often last less than a second.

More ground-breaking camera techniques followed with Into the Shark Bite, which shows what a shark bite is like from inside the shark’s moth.

Shark Week kicked off at 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Love and Basketball

Pay attention to the title Love and Basketball. This is not an ordinary sports movie. In the title, the two are equals, and love retains the first position. The movie delicately weaves the two together, using the game of basketball as a metaphor, and is an impressive movie debut from director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Love and Basketball also fits as one of the movies that fits in the emerging genre of movies where blacks play normal people (like The Wood) instead of gangsters or drug addicts. It's a nice trend and Love and Basketball is a welcome addition as well as a nice change of pace from the current crop of movies. The movie follows the lives of next door neighbors Quincy McCall (Omar Epps, The Wood, The Mod Squad) and Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan, The Best Man, Life). Quincy and Monica two people so perfect for each other that everyone can see it except for them. The two met when Monica moved in next door to Quincy when the two were eleven. Staring then, they embarked on a love-hate relationship that spanned years.

Monica is different because of her love for basketball. She wants to be the first woman in the NBA. She doesn't enjoy wearing dresses, and has a quick temper. Quincy wants to grow up and emulate his father, a player for the Clippers. The story picks up in their senior year of high school. Monica's temper is causing recruiters to turn away, while Quincy is becoming a phenom that recruiters are flocking too. They both end up at USC, and their relationship turns from rivalry to love. Love and Basketball is refreshing because the characters come first and the game comes second. There is no slow crescendo building to the big game at the end, where one point will win the entire championship. Instead, Prince-Bythewood chooses to focus on Monica and Quincy.

Epps and Lathan are great as the principal characters. Epps' choices in movies often flip from good to horrible, but thankfully, this is one of his better ones. The viewer gets to watch Quincy grow up, from a brash arrogant young teenager to an older man, aware of life's limitations. Lathan is better, also playing a character that matures in a realistic way. Monica is driven to succeed, willing to sacrifice other things in life for her dreams. Epps, Lathan, and Prince-Bythewood present complex, realistic depictions of young adults, something often absent from today's films. Supporting actors Alfre Woodard (Mumford), Dennis Haysbert (Random Hearts), and Debbi Morgan (The Hurricane) shine with the time they are given. There is nothing really new about Love and Basketball, but the story and characters are so appealing, and the movie is so well acted, that any flaws (small ones albeit) are quickly forgotten
