The auspicious start to its domestic campaign keeps "Guys" well on track to fetch more than $35 million through Sunday. That should be plenty to give the PG-13 pic a No. 1 opening weekend.
It also puts the PG-13 rated movie, directed by Adam McKay, somewhat ahead of such other Ferrell comedies as the 2004 "Anchorman," which had a first-day gross of $10.8 million on its way to a $28.4 million opening weekend and the 2008 "Step Brothers," which opened to $11.8 million and a $30.9 opening weekend. If the crowds keep coming, "Guys" could become Ferrell's second best opener, behind only 2006's "Talladega Nights."
Disney's threequel " Step Up 3D" -- which was 50% co-financed by Summit Entertainment -- stepped into multiplexes with $6.6 million in first-day coin. The ho-hum start to the PG-13 dance musical's first weekend was good enough to grab second place on the day.
Elsewhere, Warner Bros.' leggy Leonardo DiCaprio starrer "Inception" took in $5.5 million in third place on Friday. Though placing two rungs lower than the high-flying fantasy thriller had ranked previously, the solid daily tally pushed its cumulative boxoffice to $214.7 million on the cusp of a fourth frame in release.
Among pics entering sophomore sessions, Paramount's PG-13 comedy "Dinner for Schmucks" registered $3.4 million in fourth place on Friday for a $39.6 million cume, while Warners' 3D family sequel "Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" fetched $2.2 million in seventh place with a $21.7 million cume. "Schmucks" star Steve Carrell was also represented by the sixth place movie, the animated "Despicable Me," from Universal, which crossed the $200 million barrier on Thursday and added an additional $2.9 million to its kitty on Friday.
Sony's Angelina Jolie-starrer "Salt" continued on the run, as it took fifth place with a daily haul of $3 million.
Universal's romantic fantasy "Charlie St. Cloud" collected $1.7 million from its eighth day in release, an eighth-place performance that pushed pic cume to $20.5 million.
