One of Discovery Channel’s more anticipated programs has begun its 23rd year. Shark Week, as declared by the Discovery Channel, is “the most wonderful time of the year.”
Discovery Channel has been promoting the seven-day special in various ways, one of which includes the option of sending an e-card reminder to your friends. “Happy Shark Week,” it declares.
According to Nielsen data, the past three years have been the most popular in Shark Week history, garnering over 27.6 million viewers.
Ultimate Air Jaws kicked off the week with an hour-long episode that featured the Great White shark leaping into the air after its prey. Nature videographers experimented with various methods to capture the out-of-water tactics of the sharks. While the shark can propel itself 10 feet into the air, it can often last less than a second.
More ground-breaking camera techniques followed with Into the Shark Bite, which shows what a shark bite is like from inside the shark’s moth.
Shark Week kicked off at 9 p.m. on Sunday.
